Mental Health and Stress

We all live with some degree of stress – it is a fact of daily life and both the good and bad things that happen. Major life events like changing jobs, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new city can cause us to feel stressed. A degree of stress is a normal part of life. Daily job pressures or getting ready for holidays can cause us minor stress. Successfully completing a challenging work project or going on vacation can make us feel energized and happy. Good stress allows us to maintain a balance. When stress begins to feel umanageable and overwhelming - when it interferes in daily life - then  it can cause serious health concerns.

For someone in recovery from an illness, whether physical or mental, it is important to understand where to go for help and to know that you are not alone. We present a series of articles that examine our individual experiences with stress and celebrate the resiliency of people's spirits.

Long term stress is part of the package when you care for a family member who is ill for many years. How you manage that stress is very individual but families can learn from each other.
