"Recovery is a process. It is a way of life. It is an attitude and a way of approaching the day’s challenges."

Pat Deegan

Recovery can mean different things to each of us. If we've had treatment for a phsyical illness, then recovery might mean being well enough to return to work after surgery, or leaning to live with cancer - enjoying time with family and friends, or it might mean finding the right treatment for a chronic illness like asthma and being able to enjoy your favourite activies.

If you are one of the 1 in 5 Canadians who live with a mental illness  recovery means being able to enjoy life to the fullest. It means being active in your community, going to shcool, working, and doing everyday tasks like shopping for groceries or paying a bill by yourself.

Recovery is deeply personal.

It is a unique way of changing your attitude, values, skills, goals, feelings and roles.

It is a way for you to find new meaning and purpose in your life as you grow beyond the effects of living with mental illness.

It is a way for you to live a satisfying, hopeful life, and contributing life even with the limitations caused by illness

"Recovery refers to the lived experiences or persons as they accept and overcome the challenge of the disability."

Pat Deegan
